Whether you are great at setting goals or stay up well past midnight on January 1 making New Year’s Resolutions, it’s a good idea to make plans and have things to aim for.
Last January I made a list of 21 things I’d like to accomplish in the year 2021. Listen to hear which ones I finished, which ones I will move to my 22 for 2022 list, and which ones I decided weren’t that important afterall.

A few years ago I was listening to Gretchen Rubin’s “Happier” podcast. It was the close of 2018 and she and her sister, Elizabeth were reviewing their list of 18 things for 2018.
I enjoyed hearing their lists – even the things they didn’t quite accomplish. This was better than New Year’s Resolutions I had tried and failed so many times before. Their imperfect list gave me the freedom to attempt my own list, which I did in 2019, 2020, and now, 2021.
Here is my list of 21 things I tried to get done in 2021. I was successful with a few of them. I bombed on a few of them. I decided some of them weren’t as important to me as I thought.
My 21 for 2021 List
- consistent cleaning schedule – Ha! NOPE
- second Sunday at 6:00 meals – NOPE (though the three months I did accomplish this one were nice.)
- memorize 2 verses each month – NOPE I only memorized two verses
- four somethings to sell @ pianoparentpodcast.com – NOPE
- my first online course – NOPE I took a course on courses, how meta is that?! Moving this one to 2022 for sure
- six new paintings – NOPE I only did one
- 30 minute walks 3 times each week for me – EH I set up a really nice walking schedule at the beginning of the year but I let it fizzle over the summer. I still walk with my friend Marilyn a couple of times each month. She makes me walk four miles!
- follow a quarterly planning schedule – EH my friend Dawn Ivers and I have met quarterly to brainstorm podcast topics and social shares. Maybe I should change this one to a YES!!
- quarterly getaway day – NOPE I never can get away without some member of my family. I need to count that as a blessing, don’t I?!
- maintain Your Best Year Ever – YES!! I took Michael Hyatt’s course over the Christmas break last year and have tried to maintain a weekly Big 3 ever since.
- 12 boomwhacker songs on Sheet Music Plus Press – NOPE I wonder if I take this one OFF the list it might actually get done?? (Shameless plug: I do have a few arrangements for boomwhackers if you’re interested. You can find them here.)
- one book per month – EH I’m in track to finish 10 books. Not a great record but better than 9, right?
- only water at restaurants to save $3 each for No. 14 – EH I drink mostly water at restaurants anyway.
- new front door with a Texas star glass insert – YES!! I’ve been wanting a new front door for years. We finally made it happen this summer!
- instagram weekly shares #fridayforte and #waybackwednesday – YES!! Thanks to those quarterly brainstorming sessions with Dawn we got this one done! (I’d love to know how you like them. Let me know in the comments or, better yet, on Instagram. You can tag me @pianoparentpodcast.)
- set up a password system – YES!!
- personal finance pay down – EH
- monthly profit/loss statement – NOPE (Ugh! Why did I even put this one on the list. I can’t stand accounting!!)
- get a lime tree – YES!! (And I don’t think I’ve killed it….yet)
- conquer healthy habits – EH Duane and I were doing pretty well with decreasing our carb intake. We’ve been a bit slack over the holidays. Should pick that back up in January.
- penpal with my great nieces – NOPE We don’t write each other consistently enough. Might move this one to 2022 and try again.
