PPP240: 10 Reasons for Summer Piano Lessons

You might be tempted to stop piano lessons for summer break but I don’t think piano and summer have to be mutually exclusive. On today’s show, I’m suggesting 10 reasons why summer piano lessons are a great idea.

1. Use it or lose it

that’s not just referring to piano skills. if you don’t keep using your brain for cognitive processes, your response time will slow down. summer piano lessons are a great way to keep your piano skills and your brain connections fired up.

2. Change of pace

a change of pace brings new opportunities – playing duets with studiomates, music camp, playing tunes by ear, focusing on a different genre of music.

3. No school homework

no homework gives your more time to explore on the piano. no school allows you to meet with your teacher earlier in the day, when your brain is more energized.

4. Stay interested

remember when we had to wait a whole week to find out what happened on our favorite TV program? much like bingeing our favorite shows without interruption, keeping lessons going through the summer keeps the musical interest flowing.

5. Give piano lessons a try

if you are considering piano lessons for the first time, the short summer session is a great way to test the waters.

6. Music is FUN!!

does this point really need any explaination? 🙂

7. Why pay twice for the same lesson?

this is true, especially for very young students. if you haven’t had time to really soak up your new piano skills, waiting three months before your next lesson can cause you to forget what you’ve learned. your teacher is happy to re-teach you but your parents are paying twice.

8. Keep your teacher in business

if you enjoy your piano teacher, then do whatever you can to help them to be able to teach piano for their livelihood. if they can’t earn a living three months out of the year, they may have to find a different job.

9. Get a head start on fall activites

start learning your piano festival pieces early. get busy in your next theory book. use this time to get a head start on harder music.

10. Structure for both parents and kids

as much as i enjoy a good break, i know i can slip into some bad habits if i’m not careful. keeping a regular appointment with your piano teacher will help to maintain some structure in june, july, and august.

Let me hear from you
