Travis Lohmann is a composer and piano teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada. We first met Travis on the podcast when he chatted with Jeremy Duck and me about church modes in episode 207.
You can listen to PPP207: Teacher Chat about Church Modes with Jeremy Duck and Travis Lohmann here.
I invited him back today to share his personal piano story as well as his current composition project.

Here is a short video clip from my interview with Travis Lohmann
Travis works out his compositions with old-fashioned pencil and paper. Each page in his music journal carries with it the blood, sweat, and tears – and memories – of writing each note.
Happy 89th Birthday, John Williams!
The working title of Travis’ latest composer portrait is “The Misadventures of Jay Dubya”. It pays homage to the amazing film composer who was born on this day, February 8, 1932.
Psst. If you’d like to learn more about John Williams, check out last week’s Musical Mystery. PPP26: Musical Mystery, Opus 2, No. 3 “An Unsung Hero” (If you’ll pardon the pun)
I love how Travis shares his “compositions in progress” on social media. He is so transparent by letting us know about roadblocks and obstacles in his writing. It’s the next best thing to being in the same room watching him work.
I also enjoy looking at handwritten manuscripts. They are a form of art all in themselves. Travis told me in his interview that he still uses pencil and paper to notate each composition as it is developed. Here’s your proof.
Keep up the awesome work, Travis!
